I have this plant and it looks to be doing pretty well, but I do notice some leaves getting transparent and dying off. Is this normal or is it a light or element deficiency.

I have a 46g with 96watt of cf 6700k light, eco-complete.
Some co2 by way of two hagen natural cansisters.

Ah, Sunset the one plant I just can't grow It's never worked for me for some reason.

I doubt very much that it's light. Sunset is not really that light demanding unless you want the really pink color. In poor light it will continue to grow but just come out green. The stems would go before the leaves in poor light.

It sounds like a possible deficiency. Is it on new leaves or old leaves? Any other plants showing similar symptoms?

I haven't noticed any other problems,
The plant is growing fine reaching for the light, but I do notice a transparent leaf issue toward the bottom. I just started using co2 via two hagen cansisters on my 46gallon.

The only think I've dosed so far is the Nutrafin Plant-Grow fertilizer that comes with the hagen system.

It's funny about plants you can't grow, I can't grow wisteria which is suppose to be pretty easy. I seems to just stop growing.

Is this plant in the same tank you are having thread algae problems ?

If so it's probaly due to the lack of nitrate.

Old leaves dying off is an indicator of nitrogen dificiency. The plant moves the limited amount of nitrogen from thr older leaves to the newer ones.

Tha's why I asked if it was old or new leaves being affected. Most nutrients are moveable by the plant. Old leaves dying is a sign something is in short supply.

ya know Im having the same problem with my sunset hygro and wisteria.. the old leaves near the bottom are kinda shabby looking and are falling off gradually.. the new leaves look great. I was thinking since they are both hygro's that it was some sort of allelochemicals that was causing problems for this species. Do you have a target nitrate lvl that you would suggest for tetratech and myself?.. mine is always between 5-10

Dont mean to bump in on your thread tetra, but im having the exact same problem and figured it was either a snail delecacy or an allelopathy problem.

If you find something that helps. let me know man!! good luck

I used to have the same problem, finding lots of near transparant hygro leaves floating and such. However, mine were also full of little holes and as I had at that point a rather big snail infestation (round flat ones) I suspected their foul play. I then got myself two betta females that since then have completely eradicated the snail population, and since then the hygros have been very happy. I'm not sure whether you will have the same problem, but you may keep an eye out for hygro eating/egglaying snails

Wompa,

5-10ppm is just about perfect.

Old leaves dying off especially when preceded by lots of little holes could also be a shortage of potassium. Easy remedied by the addition of potassium chloride.

No problem Wompa, your looking for ideas just like me.

Actually I do have small snails, but their not out of control and I do notice my otos do like to rest on the leaves, but my gut tells me it's a nitro issue.

Several have recommended grants stump remover.
