Yes you can add larger bulbs but they won't fit under the plastic shield. Also a smaller tank doesn't need as much light as a big tank. The light doesn't have to travel as far so unless you want to grow some really high light plants and keep fish that don't mind really bright tanks I would stick with the 3wpg.

still a good idea to stick to fluorescents which are rated for 15W. any larger and it might not fit in the socket properly
