Ok so I have one of my java ferns that is getting to be much bigger than its friends. One its biggest leaf it has leafs growing from it with some roots coming down from it. Is this normal?

Hey Wings, I think its just a sign that your plant is becoming mature, these extra growths are just young plants that will eventually break free. I wouldn't worry, just either plant or get rid of the new little ferns when they break free otherwise they will be sucked into the filter. My Java ferns have been doing this for quite a while, i wouldn't worry about it.

Hi Wings,

I second ChrisParsons opinion.

In addition, if you would like to propagate the tank from the leaf's
sprouts, wait unit the “mother” leave begins to disintegrate and then
separate them before they fall off (at least that is what I heard). This
is usually the point when the “babies” are mature enough to be replanted.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

Ups

I didn't read previous posts before I answered this one. Too eager to put in my 2 cents

Read more about it in post "Java Fern babies?"

Sorry,

Thanks for the info! I figgered they were babies but the only growths I have seen before from Java fers came from the main stem/root system.

You can the leafs with the growths and plant them or else stcik them on some bogwood. They would easily attach. Obviously you have to attached with something on the bogwood until the roots attach themselves. You can also lower the leaver onto the gravel, so as to help the roots get nutrients both from the plant and from other source. Until they are mature enough you can cut that part of the leaf attached to the newly grown plant.

My Java Ferns sprout miniature plantlets at a rate of knots. I end up making a small income from the surplus when I sell the grown-up plantlets back to my LFS.

Pays for the live food my Pandas eat.

Also, look for little brown nodule like growths on the undersides of the leaves. These are spore capsules. Java Ferns produce LOTS of spores, and in the right environment, the spores can become hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny plantlets. All of which will grow to be nice mini Java Ferns that can either be grown on further or sold off.

If you have one of the fancier varieties of Java Fern such as the Windeolov, you can make quite a bit of money growing the plantlets and selling them on.

Hello,

I am having the same issue now, leaves and roots growing on the back of the leaves. Apparently they are just baby java ferns and just leave them until they are 1inch high then you can remover them and plant them in the gravel.

Here is a like of a relate post

I tend to agree, leave them to grow for about 1 inch until they start opening the leaves so as they can get their nourishment from the mother plant and then once you have roots strong enough you can plant them or attach them to some bogwood
