Water changes... well, my water changes usually consist just of topping off the water levels. In the space of a day, I'm currently losing about 1/4" of water in these things... which is enough to start exposing the tops of the java babies after a couple days. About once a month or so, I go to the sink, slowy pour out the the water and refill it.

As for the water, I generally use treated simply because I have a gallon jug of water sitting around to top off tanks and I treat that... since it's sitting RIGHT there, I just use that. If/when I remember, sometimes I'll put a drop of fertilizer in there... with my sieve brain, it's not a usual occurrence, though.

I'm sure you could easily make a shrimp habitat out of something similar, if a little bigger. I was pondering putting shrimp in as it was, but there's just no room once the plants start growing. And with the rate of evaporation... no, not worth the chance. I've actually considered pulling out some of the bigger javas and setting up the old 1/2 gallon betta tank I have around here... somewhere. I'd try my hand at ghost shrimp for that... would be fun. Or maybe attempt to find my algae eating shrimp and transfer them over... I NEVER see them as it is.

I'm thinking of maybe putting saran wrap over the tops on the weekends when I'm not home, so as to prevent coming home to javas with dried tops. I did that last weekend. Poor lil javas. (Whoops.)

Glad you like my little projects...

OK now you've got leslie and i both interesteda little later than everyone elsebut that's me usually anyways

How often and how much are the water changes on the little bowls? Is it with treated water, or just plain out of the tap, nontreated water?

Do you think with maybe a little larger bowl ***considering Leslie's big betta bowl, maybe 1/2-a whole gallon*** something like ghost shrimp or just the plants?

My interest is really sparked now

Thanks for the new pics and updates...they are filling out nicely, heidi

Hehe... no problems, heidi. Gives me a chance to show updated pictures. I've added a few more babies to the nanos, but otherwise haven't touched them besides topping them off and waterchanges. Not a huge amount of growth, but I'd like them to stay small for a while, anyway. And yes, the lamp I was talking about is just a normal desklamp, it happens to be a halogen bulb. This is Lampie, he is my friend.

Here's the round bowl - you can find them for 44 cents at your local Walmart (or, at least, that's how much they are here!).

This vase is slightly more expensive, $1.36 I think. Something like that. Still quite cheap.

Don't mind the water marks. Water evaporates quickly around here, especially now with the AC running... If I don't top off every day, I lose too much water in such small containers. I should just keep a stash of paper towels to wipe off the ring. *smacks self*

Oh Kitten, I love the idea And most of us have those silly bowls laying around, if not Walmart in the craft department and they are cheap to get...might make a good gift And if anything be a way to getting them to grow up a bit more maybe...***goes off to contemplate Leslie's baby java ferns and what could be done***

is it just a desk type lamp? heidi

I don't think snails eat java ferns, do they? I'd think it would work.

Ok, you've inspired me...I have a couple glass containers, including that same round one you have...lots of java babies and rinsed flourite so I'm ready to go Wish I had some small pieces of wood though...

Thanks for the idea

edit: I have one of those 1/2g 'kritter keepers' that I breed snails in for my puffers...do you think the java would do well in there or would the snails be a problem?

Well, during a waterchange in my ten gallon tank (where the mommy java fern resides) I did some more in depth cleaning than normal. My java moss had wandered from it's driftwood home and was planting strands wherever it felt like it, and a plant that had grown too tall for the tank moved to another tank.

In the process, I found that the too-tall plant (unidentified), had wound its roots ALL the way across the tank, and was inextricable from it's crypt wendtii neighbor. I had to pull both out to separate them, and in the process discovered that my java fern wasn't the only mother plant in the tank. In fact, my crypt had split into several plants, AND had numerous baby plantlets.

When I replanted the crypt, I planted all but the tiniest plantlets. I added the very tiniest to the square nano. I also found a few tiny java ferns had detached from the mother plant and they are now floating in the circular nano as they're too small to plant in the gravel.

Thanks for all the compliments... I like these little things. They're simple, but fun and I'm so happy that these simple glass vases were turned into something beautiful and practical.

With the rate of evaporation in my room, it's probably like going to be doing 100% water change every week as I top them off, anyway. I know I have a fountain I had running in my room for a while... it held half a gallon - or a gallon of water at the most - and if I didn't fill it up every other day, it would start gurgling as the pump couldn't catch enough water.

If there are not any fish in it I would say change it out once a month. And that is just to keep it from becoming stagnant and stinky.

Java can thrive in horrid conditions. I kept some in a bucket of water with no light (the room was pitch black 24/7) for over a month and it's still kicking.

Was thinking... I've got these two lil glass vase thingies. And lots of baby java ferns all over the place... so I put them together with a bit of gravel stolen from one of my tanks and a few tiny bits of driftwood just for fun... I'll throw a desk light over the both of them and hope the baby javas grow up to be as prolific as the mama plant.

At best, these hold three cups of water or so. The round one is about four inches in diameter. All these babies (plus at least half a dozen more, and still more tiny ones still attached to the mama fern) came from one plant. I dunno what I'm going to do with ALL these babies, but I'm trying to speed up their growing process... they just don't seem to be growing much at all. The mother plant is filling out and sending out dozens of babies, but the lil daughter plants just sit there.

Ah well, in any case, these make a cute lil place for the baby java ferns to grow a bit. Just thought I'd share.

But shannen, then they will grow up and out of the little pretty jars too fast . Co2 means faster growth, and I'd want them to take their sweet l'il ole time.

It looks like you have a few small tanks. I would make a DIY CO2 and use Ts on the feed line to split it within the Small tanks.

Java does love CO2 as do most live plants.

Nice looking nanos .

I can attest to the small amount of co2 enhancing growth on java fern and java moss. I've never seen my java moss so vibrant. I had several java fern babies in my tank that were growing slower than molasses runs. They went from less than 1/4 inch leaves to like 1.5 inch leaves almost overnight. Ok - it may have been several days, but I mean, they took off

My understanding is that java doesn't take much of it's nutrients from the substrate so I don't think the tabs will be of much use.
If you have a 5-20 gallon you could devote to their growing up that would be a good size to run a DIY CO2 on (mines running on a 20).

Hmm... CO2? I've never messed with that. Could be an interesting experiment. Is there anyway to make them happier in these lil vases for now? The gravel is from one of my tanks, so it's got some "goop" in it for fertilizers... I have tabs and such I could add if you think it might help them.

When these lil baby plants grow up, I'll prolly make up a bigger display for them. For now, they're cute in these lil glass thingies.
