I'm going to be adding additional wattage in the near future but not sure what the best placement is for the lights. Which of these would be best? The tank is 72"l and 18"w

i would stagger them. if you look at fixtures you buy if the bulbs are shorter that is what they do (this is usually seen with actinic pc bulbs in salt wate

I think the bulbs are 21 1/2 or 22".

if they are only 22" i would upgrade to six bulbs but staggering themm would be fine too. what is your tank gallons and the wattage on the bulbs

The tank is 135 gal and the bulbs are 55w Power compacts from Aquarium Hobbyist Supply.

If you stagger them you will have more even lighting. If you don't you will have brighter places in the tank.....which isn't always a bad thing. You can grow higher light requiring plants in the bright areas and grow lower light requiring plants in the low light areas. It's a good way to break the WPG rule when trying to grow high light plants.
