hey guys,

i have 1x 38W powerglo tube and
1x gro lux 38wat tube lighting my planted discus tank, thats 55g, quiet a few plants,

currently i'm keeping the lights on 12+ hours a day, is it to much? i really want the plants to thrive, without the risk of green water, shoudl i get a timer for my tank lights so they only get 8 hours of light a day?

The standard recommendation for lighting duration is 10-12 hours a day. I have the lights on for 10 hours in all my planted tanks (all with timers). I think you should invest in a timer for your lights evertheless since they're cheap and useful (saves you from having to remember to turn them off and on).

BTW, did you see the article on keeping discus in planted tanks in last month's TFH magazine?

It was a pretty good article - talks about lighting, aquascaping, which plants and Discus companions to choose, etc. Actually I think I have an extra copy of it. PM me if you're interested.
