Hi,

We set up a hospital tank a few weeks ago and today when I look in the tank I find a couple of very healthy looking duckwed leaves floating around on the surface.

Where on earth did that come from?

I'm going to list as much info as I can on this tank to maybe shed some light on this situation. Any input would be appreciated.

  • The hospital tank is one that we have had sitting empty for several years and even when it was in use never had live plants in it.

  • The original gravel from this tank was reused. (after washing of course)

  • The tank has only plastic plants (bought a few months ago and used in our 5 foot tank for a couple of weeks but have been sitting dry since that tank exploded a couple of months ago).

  • The fish in the hospital tank were transfered from the 180 gallon - no duckweed in there at the moment.

  • The filter in use is brand new, but was seeded with filter muck from our 180 gallon display tank.

  • I think we may have had some duckweed in the 180 gallon years ago but it wasn't much and didn't last long in that tank. There has definitely not been duckweed in any of our tanks for at least the last 5 years, maybe longer.

If anyone has any ideas on how this appeared I'm all ears. I'm not sure that it is a problem at this stage, I'm just perplexed as to how it got there.
