tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | Thanks LF! So, what's up with the floating plants in there? Just left them in for extra suck up. And no filter? Hm, that works? I havent' decided on what I'm gonna do with this yet. I might simply do 50% wc from the 72g twice a week and add excel. No water movement might be a problem. Will there be shrimpsters in this tank later on? Yeah, I'm thinking two tiny crs or whatever else I could find. Quite some light there, excellent!!! Do you think it's too much. Not sure how 13watts (low intensity really) will work over 0.5G My Scapes |

The way I see it is this: if there's animals in the tank without a filter you'll need to change the water often. That will lead to CO2 fluctuations and you run the BBA risk. Keeping a constant supply of C in the tank should help keep it at bay. IMO Otherwise I like the design. Your rock is large enough in the tank to make an impact, unlike my original 4G design and I guess you need SOMEPLACE to put all that extra riccia... |

Is it glass or acryllic? If the light were right at the surface, I'd probably say it was too much, but you can see how much of the light "misses" the tank, I think you'll be ok. tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | Thanks for the comments guys! Yep, definitely adding excel daily, already started in addition if I directly add water from the 72g twice a week I would actually have alot of C in the water. What do you guys think? It would even be simple to add water from the 72g everyday, I mean we are talking .5 gallons. I should acutally call this my local neighborhood retail nano. I really wasn't planning on this, but as I said because of the rain, but here's the rundown. Glass Cube - $12.00 - Pier One Light - $24.99 - Staples Rocks, hairgrass - $2.00/$2.99 - Petland Discounts Eco and Ricca (Free from the 72G) So the wholesetup cost me about $42. I probably could have found a cheaper light, but I liked the way this one looked. I could also return the light and get the red sea clip light (I think it's 9watts for about $15) online. The regular clip lights that you could put the screw in cfs are too big. Matty that would be cool to do a saltwater nano that small. My Scapes |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | I think 13W is just right, a load of it will get lost as it doesn't even hit the tank. And I find your current light very fitting, somehow very high tech. I hear NowherMan6 on the CO2 fluctuation issue. You add water from the 72 and have instant high CO2, then - during the course of the day - it will degas somewhat, just to be replenished the next day again. What I don't know is the role of Excel in this process. Ingo |

And I find your current light very fitting, somehow very high tech As Matty pointed out and now you as well there is alot of light displacment (maybe I need more ) You add water from the 72 and have instant high CO2, then - during the course of the day - it will degas somewhat, just to be replenished the next day again. What I don't know is the role of Excel in this process. That's a good point, the degassing I guess would be slowed somewhat since there's no water movement at all. I guess I squirt alittle excel in there daily for now, until I get a feel for what I'm working with. I'll guess I'll have to start using my test kits again , well for kh and ph anyway. My Scapes |

AND glass. That's nice. Did that little stand come with the glass cube at peir one, or did you make it? I agree the co2 will probably stabilize to atmospheric levels pretty quick, within a few hours I would suppose, even with no agitation. I don't think it's a bad idea however, to use your 72g water. It's got all the other nutrients in place and some co2 is obviously better than none. I say go for it. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

I find Walmart has a TON of options - any square glass flower vase, any large type of glass thing can be used as a nano tank. Same thing with the stand/ ba |

tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | Components for a nano nano like tetra's can be found all over. That's definitely true. I hardest thing is probably finding a light locally, because most of the small one's are halogens which I don't thing can be used (heat, etc.) It was kinda fun, poking around and see what I could come up with on a budget. I also went into Target or should I say TAR-JAY and I almost went with a larger roundish cylinder, but those are optically not as pleasing. I would have went into Walmart, but I didn't have one locally. I bet places like IKEA would have alot of good things. My Scapes |

mrwizerd Big Fish Posts: 360 Kudos: 197 Votes: 75 Registered: 24-Oct-2005 | For the water movement could you simply use something like an aqua-lifter pump, which would sit under your tank and suck the water and then spit it back out again using 1/4" air hose. My thought is you could use rigid stuff to come over the edges this way you could move water gently around the tank and it would have little visual impact because you could take a rigid 1/4" line and use heat to bend it into a J that has a little extra - on the short end of the J to act as a nozzle(i.e. -J but upside down). I am sure you could also find away to use it to diffuse DIY co2 mixtures if you wanted. |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | And just for the record for anyone else viewing, another great place to look for glass nano tanks is flower shops - many carry glass cubes of various sizes. Before buying one, stick your hand in the middle of it and view it from the side to make sure there isn't any (or too much) distortion. If everything looks good, voila! instant glass nano tank |

tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | Mr Wizard, Thanks for the input. That might be worth a try I guess I'll see how things go. I've never had those pumps, but I seen them used on top of some overflows I think. I still have a hagen co2 cansister that I could hide under my cabinet but I'm not sure I'm keeping the tank where it is. Right now it's staying near the momma tank so I could look over it easily.
