Hers's a close up of the phallus structure. I was in a rush to plant it when I got it and temporarily held it down with a rubber band. When I removed that today to replace with thread I noticed it had started to attach to the rock somewhat already.

Oh I also noticed when taking the pics that I'm the proud daddy of some Boesmanii fry

bensaf attached this image:

Yo, bensaf, it's me Andy, regarding the color of the red moss, have you tried adding more of chelated iron ferts? Coz I did, using one of the iron ferts that they sell in the usual shop and not only the moss growth seems faster, the color also shows improvement, since it become brighter red.
And I got news for you, I just receive samples of Monosolenium Timika its different from M. Pellia in the way that it has no "bones" in the thallus, while the Pellia has a distinct one, it's also a bit smaller and lighter in color, does anybody has info about this? Is this truly a new species or mutation? Havent seen anything like that before though...
I also got a sample of Hygrophyla, taken from Borneo, the guy who sent it said that it grows submerged on the river, but in my tank it kept growing out of surface, it's pretty tall about 80cm already, has a stiff stem about 5mm in diameter, round leaves around 5cm long, it looks rather like a non aquatic plant to me though. But I havent been able to find any info about these 2 plant, hope anybody could help me out with some data

There`s certainly growth, It`s about doubled in size and has attached quite well, no change in color.

There is just over 2 wpg of PC lighting.

That color would make great contrast for lower lit tanks...*

I must admit I'm still a bit hmmmm.....

It's a double edged sword, the color makes it unique but also makes it difficult to know what to do with it. There's only so much can be done with mosses and liverworts. Tie this to a dark wood and it's almost invisible. It needs to be surround by a lot of bright green for it to make any kind of "statement" aquascaping wise. This is why I have it in the midst of a bright green sag carpet. I agree with Babel I think it would look better in a small tank. It may end up being transferred to the small tank and mixed in with the dense Riccia covering I have going in there now. A flash of red here and there popping out of the Riccia forest may be interesting

Wow Thats lovely ....okay so I like cornflowers rather than roses in a garden too maybe I'm just easily impressed.
That color would make great contrast for lower lit tanks...*sigh* wonder how well it lasts "forgotten" in a water bottle during a flight back to the states .

Tom,

As to where it was found. I'd imagine locally here in Indonesia, which is where I live at present (don't let that Irish flag fool you).

The bright red tips just appeared over night so could be reproductive pods. Now it would certainly be a bit of a beauty if THAT red color became more noticable.

Not sure as yet what to do with the stuff It's just so dark a color that attaching it to wood would make it invisible.

At the moment i just tied it to a piece of white rock (white rock is something I'd prefer to keep OUT of my aquascape) and put it in the dwarf sag foreground where at least it's visible 'til I see what it does.

Looks awful weedy. That seems like a plant that I'd be picking clean out of a tank. Probably a liverwort. They say where it came from?

Given the color, that should be fairly easy to figure out once you know where it's from.

I've found a few mosses and weeds and brought them into the hobby, but folks never got all excited about them.

Ho hum they were.

But I knew where they were from and I collected them.

Good to hear it attaches.
Wondering if it'll color up more.

Also, reproductive structures seem present, are those redder "seed heads" (2n sporophytes) coming out of the thallus?

Regards,
Tom Barr

Am I the only one who can't see the pictures?

Edit: Forget about it. Seems like I can't see any pictures on fishprofiles at the moment...

It is nice looking whatever it is Bernard. Congratulations again on the find and also for the new fry. Be interesting to see if Tom knows more about it.

Plant guys/gals prepare to go green with envy (no really bad pun intended)

I've being itching to make some changes on my tank, had a few ideas but all with plants that are quite hard to find. As it happens I have some free time this week so I called up my "plant guy". He's the best plant guy in Jakarta and a pretty good fish guy too. Always has something interesting, one of the world's foremost experts on Microsorum species, does a lot of work for Tropica. Anyway I call him up to see if he has anything interesting and if he's free on Friday.

Drops a bombshell on me. He has a newly discovered species - a Red Moss :88) So new and rare it doesn't even have a name yet ! Nobodie's managed to identify it yet.

From what he's told me it's a deep blood red, a moss plant but with a look and growth pattern that is very similar to Riccia. BUT it's low light, easy to grow, no co2 or ferts required and unlike Riccia attaches to wood and rock - he's even had it attach to glass

Do I want to buy some ? Uh ...does a bear...well you know the answer. Damn right I do (in my excitement I forgot to ask the price) but I'll pay whatever I have to pay(don't tell the wife!) .Me.Wants.Bad.

I pick it up on Friday. Don't worry I'll be posting pics as soon as I get my hands on this stuff.

Imagine it, a blood red low light moss

By some remote possibility as anybody ever heard of such a wonderous thing , if so where can I find info ?

Sounds more like a Podostemaceae than moss.
If it's a Moss/liverwort, the term would be thallus, perhaps microphyll.

Be interesting to see it. I've found numerous mosses/liverworts, but few are suitable for long term horticulture for aquarist.
This one sounds like it does good so far.

Update: Picked up the moss yesterday but didn't get back to the apartment until after 11pm. Just had time to tie it to a rock and plop it in. Won't be back to apartment until Sunday so I'll post pics then.

Fascinating stuff. It is indeed a deep dark blood red. The "leaves" for want of a better (ie more scientific) word are shaped like this <> and grow in a zig zag pattern. They look like little miniscule balloons ! The whole thing looks like a microscopic close up of a cell structure. It's quite thick and very healthy looking. It also had quite a few baby shrimp scuttling around inside it.

Pics will be up on Sunday

Yes bensaf you need therapy....fish therapy! go look @the tank for 30 minutes a day .

Yes plants can be dyed, you see it in flowers all the time, however aquatic plants is a bit different .

Sounds like a perfectly lovely plant (especially that low light bit ) *waits in line for pics, quietly setting her attack goldfish on the people infront of her* .
