I have been trying to get algea to grow in my new 55 gallon tank because I have moss balls ( algea family ) and with in 1 week I am noticing growth. Now for those who do not know, moss balls are supposed to VERY SLOW growing plants. The LFS I bought them from said that they had a moss ball in a planted tank ( fully set up mind you ) for 3 weeks and have noticed no growth. Within 1 week my tank is now covered in algea. Now don't let that fact scare you, I have no fish in this tank and have been trying to grow algea.

The products I used were Red Sea's new products:
Flora Vit (1 tsp per 60 gallons per week)
Flora Fe (1 tsp per 60 gallons per week)
Flora Pure (1 tsp per 12 gallons per water change) (( for chlorine and hevy metals))

Now I have also put in about 2 gallons of cultured water from my 20 gallon tank, but I don;t think I can blame this much success on 2 gallons of cultured water.

Hopes this helps you all as it did me!!

Sorry, confused

I would have thought that saying certain fertilizers are great for encouraging algae were the worst nightmares of the company's marketing dept !

Most of us want to avoid algae ! Not much point having moss balls if you can't see them thru the green soup

Am I missing something ?

Moss balls are algea. They are just a more hartier and slower growing form of it. They will actually deprive the unwantd algea from the nutrients that it needs to make our tank look like crap.

The whole point I was making was that a plant that is said to never be noticed growing, I am noticing it very much. And also since I have no fish in my tank, I have very little if any of the nutrients for plants to grow.

All I am saying is that this stuff is the ultimate miracle grow for tanks. Keep in mind I am only running about 1/2 wpg.

Now don't get me wrong my tank is not over grown with algea. The walls of my tank are still clear, the algea is really only growing on my sand and filter pipes.

Just letting you all know that this stuff definately does what it is supposed to... but I would never in a million years try to over dose this stuff in my tank.
