I was looking up some info on crypts and came up with this link.

A yeast-based CO2 generator was described in an article published in a 1962 issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine entitled "Aeration with Carbon Dioxide."

The text and scan of the article are there.

I thought it was interesting seeing CO2 injection as a brand new thing 40 years ago. They used the DIY yeast method, it's cool to find out the origins of things we use today and knowing that people have been using them for 40 years.

First experiments with the system used hydrochloric acid and marble as the source of gas production, but this gave off too much gas too quickly, and was therefore unsuitable.

D'oh! I can just imagine how that would have gone.

If the carbon dioxide aeration system proves to be of real and lasting value, we'll be grateful for its welcome advancement of the hobby.

If only they knew.

EDITOR'S NOTE: One thing that worried us when we first read this article was, wouldn't the fermentation in the bottle containing the yeast-sugar-water combination make the room smell like a brewery ? We asked Mr. Olesen about it, and he assures us that this is not the case.

Hee hee old fashion stuff !.

They said to not shake the bottle odd that. And from the way they word it it's almost like they want the bubbles to cause the surface agitation...then again I suppose they didnt really hold with filters way back then either .

I would be scared to use a needle valve there, compressed gas has a tendency to explode.
