Hey everyone ,

I'm just thinning out some of my plants in my 20 gal. that are covered with a very fuzzy green algae (but leaving some behind).

What type of fish out of these two or invert could I go with for my 20 and 10 gal. to help with algae cleanup? How many?

Fish in my planted 20 gal. are:

6 Trilineatus Cory's
4 Paleatus Cory's
4 Neon Rainbows
2 Female Red Kribensis
1 Male Gourami
1 Female Betta
1 Bristlenose Pleco

Temp: 27^C
pH: 8
NH3: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: 5
GH: 6.72
KH: 3.92
CO2: n/a, but will be buying a CO2 test kit (as well as a Fe test kit)

Fish in my planted 10 gal. are:

5 WC's
1 Male Betta

Temp: 26^C
pH: 8
NH3: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: 5
GH: 6.72
KH: 3.92
CO2: n/a

Thanks

Otos and/or amano shrimps. SAEs get too large(4 inches) and are very active! You might be able to keep a small one temporarily in the 20 gal cuz they do a great job in eating the green filamentus hair algae and the only fish that eats black brush algae.

FOTB,

Just one thing I noticed. I'd save your money and not bother with buying either a Co2 test kit or an Fe test kit.

If you are not injecting any extra Co2 there's really no need for a test kit, they are not very reliable and you can tell your co2 content more accurately by using a KH/pH table to calculate. With your present KH and pH you have 2ppm of Co2, this is average for a non co2 supplemented tank and is not likely to change.

The Fe test kits, unless you buy an expensive one like LaMotte, are so inaccuarate they are practically useless. Again with Co2 injection the Fe in your tap water is more then likely sufficient.

Save the money for more fish or plants or put it in the saving fund for a co2 kit

Hi bensaf,

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that I am adding extra CO2, via the Hagen system. My pH hasn't really droped that much since adding extra CO2 2 weeks ago. I don't know if it's because my KH is to strong, or that because I'm getting 1 bubble making it's way up the bubble counter every 8 seconds. Any ideas? And thanks, I'll avoid buying the CO2 and Fe test kits

Here's a pic of the Amano Shrimp I picked out

Hi,

Your KH is practically perfect, right in the ideal range of 4 degrees. But 1 bubble every 8 secs isn't doing much. I've never done the DIY Co2 so don't know much of anything about the various mixtures, but sounds like you need to get a stronger mix going.

You can find a KH/pH/Co2 calculating table and other good info here http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/articles.htm

Nice shrimp, very hard to find here, being looking a while
