A LFS near me has some plants that I would like to get. I have never seen this type of plant and would like to know what it is, and if it is a true aquatic plant.

Description:
Long thin leaves that do not have a stem. So, the leaf runs the length from root to tip. They are light green in color with a thin white stripe running the length of the leaf.

I've believe I've heard that any plant with this coloration is not a true aquatic plant. Is this true?

Sounds like a plant variety called something like "white ribbon"... I forget what the true name is. I did a bit of research on it when they started selling those plants packed in gel at places like petsmart/petco. If we're talking about the same plant, then no, it's not aquatic.

I'm not a plant expert, though, so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

The plant you are describing is a Ophiopogon japonicus 'Variegatus' also known as varigated fountain plant. This is a really hardy plant it will live several months under water but as soon as you see any leave deterioration you should take it out and grow it emerged.

Here is very common for LFS to sell it as an acuatic plant, it's not. in time it will rot and mess up your tank. You can use it if you have an open top tank, if half of it is emerged then it will have no problems and it really looks good.

Good Luck
