Hi Guys n Gals,

First up, let me apologize for the quality of these pics, I only have a dodgy/old webcam to get images into my 'puter right now...

Bought a few bunches of plants today of two types, and the I.D. is alluding me/confused.

OK... Pics first and then my thoughts/comments after...

Plant 1:

Plant 2:

Plant 1 was sold to me as "Red stem hygro", but to me it looks like Ludwigia repens (albeit a bit different to the L. repens I used to keep, who's stems were a dark reddish-brown and seemed a good deal "woodier" ) It has reddish/pink stems, with the same color showing in the top leaves (leaves in opposed pairs along the stem).

Plant 2 (had to get it out of tank cause was planted at the far end of tank away from computer) was sold to me as "Stricta" but it's way different to the Hygrophila corymbosa I currently have. Maybe it's the emersed form? (Which I have never seen, but from what I can find I understand the leaves are much smaller). It has "interesting" bud type things at each leaf node (leaves also in opposed pairs)...

It was the first time I'd been to the LFS in question, and since it was a fair walk to get to it, I didn't want to leave empty handed (seems they had a great range/knowledge of fish, they were a bit understocked/vague when it came to plants though).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated in identifying these (I'm somewhat OCD about having to know what I have in my tank).

Thanks tons in advance (and once again, sorry about the pic quality),
Dex

I agree that the first plant is L. repens.

The second probably is the emersed form of H. corymbosa - those flower buds coming off of the stem look exactly right. However, it could also be a related species like the one I bought recently that turned out to hate being submersed. Try it and see!

Thanks Mousling

Will give it a shot (though now I'm worried if it does work it will turn into a monster patch up that end of the tank (it's only a 40 Gal)). Saw the same plant for sale at a different place, but when they couldn't even take a guess at an ID I passed (and then today I thought "what the heck".

Hi ,

The first one does look like Ludwigia Repens, could possibly the "Rubra" variety which would explain the pink stems.

The second yes looks like emmerse growth Corymbosa. The color and texture of leaves. The problem with Corymbosa is that even if you have the submersed form and you let it pierce the suface of the water it will take on it's emmersed form and shed all it's leaves under water ! I'm not sure how it works the other way around, but it may shed all it's emmersed growing leaves. It should then take on it's submersed form and start growing again.

The only time I've seen buds like those is on a Reineckii Liliancana (sp?)

Thanks for that Bensaf

I'm becoming more and more sure I'll remove the stricta, even if it does "come good" and change over to the submersed form, for the effect I'm after in that part of the tank, it just wouldn't fit...

Oh well, guess I'll just have to cruise some LFSs this weekend *rubs hands together*

Cheers,
Dex
