"Intermediate - you know enough about growing plants.

You have correctly answered 10 of 27 questions."

Hopefully I'm better at guessing on my midterm exams today

And Tom never gave us his result, just the usual school child whining about unclear questions, wrong answers etc. .

Tom – I would never dare to take your test, I feel bad enough as it is, no need to bring me down even further.

Yes, I do whine about bad questions and I've also backed my whining up. I also hear whining from students as well:-)
I'm on both sides of this fence.

FYI.
I missed all of the questions that are wrong.
I missed them because they are wrong.

No whining, just the answers are wrong and have other possible answers.

Regards,
Tom Barr

1.What is "nyctigamous behavorior" in aquatic plants?
err...
2.What genus might you find "adaxial" stomates?
uhmm... adaxial would be on the upper side of a leaf... maybe grasses?
3.What plant/s possess "indirect" bicarbonate use?
err
4.What is the maxiumum lighting saturation for most aquatic plants in micromoles/m^2/sec?
no idea
5. Why is Chara an "alga" and why is Riccia a "plant"
I'm reaching here, but algae in general are much simpler in structure than plants. My guess would be that riccia contains several distinguishable differentiated structures, like a vascular system, but I'm not certain

Bloody tough questions, and as a plant moleculAar biologist I feel like I should know them

I got 17 of on the plant test btw... I did worse than I thought

1.What is "nyctigamous behavorior" in aquatic plants?

Leaves/flowers close or open after a peroid of exposure to light. Cabomba, Milfoils, some Rotala do this towards evening.

2.What genus might you find "adaxial" stomates?

Lilies/ Nymphaea. It'd be bad to have them on the bottom like most plants since they would not get the air as a source for CO2.

3.What plant/s possess "indirect" bicarbonate use?

Hydrilla. Pumps H+(pH of about 4) out into the water to reduce the HCO3 to CO2 and then uses the CO2 that way. Direct bicarb use would be were the plant/algae uses an enzyme to reduce the HCO3 on the surface of the pklant/algae cell, then take in the CO2 an dleaves the OH out side the cell. Many species form CaCO3 shells and structures this way as the OH's build up on the cell's surface.

4.What is the maxiumum lighting saturation for most aquatic plants in micromoles/m^2/sec?

600 micromoles/m^2/sec

5. Why is Chara an "alga" and why is Riccia a "plant"

It's all about the embyro, plants retain a multicellular embyro(offers much greater protection), algae does not(single cell only).

"I'm reaching here, but algae in general are much simpler in structure than plants. My guess would be that riccia contains several distinguishable differentiated structures, like a vascular system, but I'm not certain"

Riccia does not possess a vascular system, Bryophyta is lacking vasculature. In most respects, Kelps, Caulerpa etc are more advanced than many Bryophytes.

"Bloody tough questions, and as a plant moleculAar biologist I feel like I should know them"

Are microbiologist larger than molecular biologist?
I can see the microbiologist with 40X, do I need an SEM for you? hehe

Don't worry, I'm not half as serious as people think I am.

Regards,
Tom Barr

Well,

So far, Besaf is for sure “The_King_Of_Plants”

And Tom never gave us his result, just the usual school child whining about unclear questions, wrong answers etc. .

Tom – I would never dare to take your test, I feel bad enough as it is, no need to bring me down even further.

So if you excuse me now, I have to go and remove all lights, CO2 and what not from my tank, stop the EI, and buy a simple light bulb and Java Fern .

Ingo

You have correctly answered 19 of 27 questions.

I blame it on the wording of half the questions. I think this guy needs to spend a little more time in an english class instead of in front of his planted tank....

Guru - I bet everyone are asking for your advice cause seems like you know just about everything...:-)

You have correctly answered 21 of 27 questions.

The average of surfers gave 9.93 correct answers.

I agree some of the questions were dodgy, probably the 6 I got wrong

I swear the plant in Q27 is Stellata rather then Pantenal

Tom I'll have a go,

1) Huh ???
2) Hmmmmmm?
3)Could I have that question in English please.
4)Paris ?
5)The only word I recognised was Riccia.

How'd I do ?

I have no idea what "chara" is, but I know that riccia reproduces with encased spores, unlike algae.

Furthermore, I would like to add that I got a twelve. The last question was a killer. Oh well. I'm not a plant person.
