I just transferred my tank over to a planted tank. I used about an 1.5 inches of fine natural gravel mixed with flourite. It is important to have a substrate with nurtients for plants. You also need to get a light depending on the kind of plants you want to grow (high, medium or low light) it is best to have at least 2.5 watts per gallon, so for you about 65-70 watts (i think) I just bought a satellite light from thatfishplace.com. It is quite an expensive adventure but so worth it!

if you're going to go all out and change gravel, you might as well get a couple bags of gravel made specially for planted aquarium. Most commonly found is Flourite. Flourite is "natural gravel" color and would benefit your plants much more than regular aquarium gravel. But if you can't find Flourite or can't afford it (being that it is slightly more expensive), then by all means, go with regular gravel.

If you cant afford just florite for your tank you can get like
50/50 50% regualar gravel and 50% flourite. YOur plants im sure will do great in that mixture especially if you have good watts per gallon.
