What are good plants that require low to medium light that cichlids will leave alone? (jack dempsey, firemouth, green severum, gold gourami).

Java moss might be the only thing that they would leave alone. Even then It maybe in trouble. All of them are known plant destroyers and will definately go farther than just destroying a couple plants. The jack will aquascape according to his plans and there really isn't anything you can do about it. Also gold gouramis arn't cichlids just in case you didn't know.

Hornwort

I have a GT, sev, Cuban, angel, and blue acara. There is a big mass of floating hornwort and anacharis in the tank. The sev picks at the anacharis.

I have a number of Amazon swords. For the most part they're left along, except when the GT and acara are spawning. Part of their ritual is to take a leaf in their mouth and shake their head violently back & forth.

I also had a couple of very nice anubias, one that my plec loved to rest under. I moved them though because they were constantly being nibble at by someone ]:|

I wrote a similar post not too long ago, the link is [link=here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Planted%20Aquaria/60392.html" style="COLOR: #FFCC99[/link].

This is what the tank currently looks like:

Yes, I know gourami is not cichlid. It was something just to add to subject line.
Thanks all for your input!

Cichlids will eat most plants & it's nearly useless to add plants, as they will up-root or eat them.

If you're going with Gourami's, choose the Pearl Gourami. Very peaceful & brilliant colours.

yeah, plants with severum is not a good idea because they will eat just about every plant you can put in there. my severums even nibbled on my anubias, which is supposed to be one of the "safe" plants you can keep with plant eating fish. best bet is to get a more realistic looking fake plant, imho.

Also, will fish eating plants make them sick?
I have added duckweed, which was the fish ate. My firemouth has died. I can not figure out why.
That was my favorite fish.
