I was going to order some of this from Greg Watson, but I need to know if this stuff is safe to dose up to recomended potassium levels. I don't need to dose Nitrate or Phosphate very often because I get plenty of that from natural sources, but I need the Potassium. Will sulfur concentrations eventually build up, or do plants use it, maybe it evaporates??

Thanks,
Matt

I use K2SO4 to dose potassium and I think it's pretty safe. I also perform a 70% water change a week, so I can't really tell about sulphate build up, but it's supposed to be safe for the fish. I know my fish don't mind it.

I use it too, lots of people do. As far as I can tell, it's safe.

Use it too. But only once a week as the KNO3 and KH2PO4 and TMG all have Potassium.

Potassium Chloride will work too.

Thanks evryone, I'd just like to mix it up I guess.

Bensaf - you know where I can get KCl, or if it's sold with a common name? Greg Watson doesn't have any.

KCl = Fake salt.

It's the only good use I can think of for the stuff.

I see myself getting stared in confusion at asking some grocery store employee where their "fake salt" is .

Brand names?

Nu-Salt is one. It's usually right beside the real salt in grocery stores. Ask them for "Salt Substitute" because that sounds much nicer. Some water softener pellets are pure potassium chloride, you can get a 10kg bag of it at a hardware store if you really want to.

Just check the ingredients before you buy.

Thanks Tryst . Now I know 2 things - what water softener pillows are made of(and fake salt), and where to get my potassium from.

I'd personally stick with K2SO4.

Plants use SO4.Disulide bridges in enzymes, Fe-S bridges for electron transport etc.

Tanks have much less SO4 issues than Cl issues at high concentrations.

If yopu do 50% weekly water changes, the max concentrational build possible(assumes no plant uptake) is 2x whatever you add weekly.

If you do not do many water changes, you can dose a little on the low side. Maybe 5-10ppm a week.

Tom Barr

Maybe I'll use both then if the sulfate will be used by the plants.
