Hey all.

I have a small problem with algae in my tank and l want to get rid of it in the next few weeks or so.

I already have all the Seachem products.. Flourish, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium to kick off a new feeding schedule, as the redsea products didn’t work for me.

Also l will be installing a UV steriliser next week.

Once l have the UV installed l plan to run the tank with no lights for 5 days. I hope this will be enough time for the algae to fall off my Micro-swords.

My question is. Do l still feed my plants while doing the blackout?

Cheers
Wayne

i'm not a real expert on plant keeping however unless the algee is free floating and not stuck to things i think that a uv sterilizer may be a waste. the algee actualy has to pass through the unit to die.

i had a thread about algee not long ago, and FRANK provided me with a fantastick article. just cant find it now!

if hes around he could help you!

also its possible your over feeding your plants or your nitrate levels are too high.

put up all the details of your tank and people can give a more defined list of solutions

Sharkbait,

Blackout:
No don't feed your plants if your doing a blackout. They can't process anything without light.

UV Sterlizer:
Africanman is quite right, the UV will only kill free floating algae because it must pass thru the uv unit. If your having algae problems on the leaves you will still have that even if you run a UV 24/7.

As suggested you need to post more information (light, co2, water parameters) to understand more about the algae you have.

Thanks guys for your feedback.
Yes I’m aware that the UV will only kill free floating algae. But if the lights are off and there is no feeding source for the algae it will die off and release itself off my micro-swords (have dont this already) The UV will be there to maintain an algae free tank once l have rid of it from the blackout.
