I would go with the anubias first. They are easier than crypts. Crypts may lose their leaves at first. If you would rather go with crypts you should stick to wendtii(green). this is probably the easiest one.

I like the "coffeefolia" (sp?)

Do you have something to tie it to, like driftwood or rocks?

I just got my first anubias a few days ago... they would probably be easier for a beginner, supposed to be nearly imposible to kill and they look nice. More portable too because you can move them on their rocks or wood for easy rescaping.

Crypts will grow a bit faster but they might melt a bit when you get them home, don't worry about it, just remove the melty leaves and they will come back. Any of the crypts you'd find in your average lfs would be fine, it's the rare ones that are harder. They aren't as portable because they can melt when they are moved. I have heard some people say that you can prevent melting by rinsing the crypts to get them to release their toxins before they are put in the tank or placed in new spots etc. I can't comment personally because I haven't been keeping them for long at all.

Both are a bit hard to find here but both are very cool. In fact why not buy a few of each? just playing devil's advocate here

For anubias species, nana will stay smallest usually, coffeefolia is nice......heck just collect them all. I already have A. barteri v. nana and another one that has been IDed as probably another variety of nana. I'm getting this one soon as a present. Caladiifolia I think, about the size of a 10 gallon tank according to the current owner. All of the anubias are nice plants, any of them would be fine.
