Hey guys, I was thinking about putting real plants in my 35g aquarium. What are nice looking, relatively easy to care for plants? Is it true that when you get real plants in you tank you then get snails? I remember when I had my first tank (10g) I put some real plants in there, and in about 1 month my tank got infested with small snails.

Will this "snail infestation" happen again in my 35g tank if I put real plants in my tank again?

Is your tank a tall or long tank?

What lighting do you have? What kind of substrate are you using? Some plant suggestions to get you started would be Java Fern or Anubias Nana, maybe some Vals or some Crypts.

Thanks for your input as always, Shane

Hi sonjamo,

That is always a possibility, the best way to insure that you dont, is to carefully check out the sellers tank. If you see snails (and sometimes they will be hard to spot) you probably will get snails. I suggest you buy from a quality source. There are shops out there including online that actually guarantee snail free plants.

I have bought live plants both online and at LFS's and have had good results with snail free plants. Although I have had a few prob's you can always add in snail eating fish to handle it.

I believe that the risk is WELL worth it for the results that live plants give you. Just look carefully at the tanks you are buying plants from. If you cant see into the tank, don't buy plants from that tank. Its that simple.

well said FishKeeperJim if you cant see into the tank dont buy the plants. I love moss. Think a nice bit of java moss or christmas moss is realy nice and is easy to care for. Also some plants help put oxygen into that tank and remove nitrates. As for the snails there is always a chance of eggs on the plants which is a right pain! So if You have a quarentine tank then you could put the plants in that and if you can see no snails after some time then put it into the main tank. Hope this helps
