Is the PH level directly related to the CO2 content of my tank?

I ask because my plants aren't growing all that fast and the PH, despite water changes, keeps going up to 7.5

CO2 will lower your PH.

Other things will also raise and lower the PH.

Whats your tap Ph, and what substrate decor ect is in the tank? Also important to know is the Kh.

Just remember there is no stupid question. It's much better to be informed about the right way to do something or have the knowledge to correct a water condition that has went awry then feel that a question is stupid. We all have a lot to learn and all of us were new to the hobby at some time.

Depends really, on what plants you have. If you have slow-growing plants, well, then they're not going to grow that fast. It's said that if the surface of the water is disrupted a lot (filter output, air stone, etc), that will cause CO2 loss.

Have you tried fertilizers? What sort of substrate and lighting do you have?

Without knowing what plants, substrate, and lighting conditions you have, it's kind of hard to give you a good answer. Let us know and we'll try to help.

I will test my tap PH tonight and see what it is. My substrate is medium gravel. And I am also going to get some CO2 in there as well. Any suggstions on which type of CO2 system to use that's not going to break the bank?

Thanks everyone. I will also try to figure out what plants I have. I know that I have a amazon sword, but not sure what the other plants are called.

As Old Timer said , no such thing as a dumb question. A few months ago you could have asked me the same question and wouldn't have able to answer if my life depended on it

Yes there is a relationship. Depending on your KH you pH will drop. How much it will drop and how quickly depends on the KH which is a buffer.

Water changes won't effect your pH at all (assuming your tank is filled with tap water).

Plants aren't too fussy about pH. Co2 levels are more important, we monitor the co2 levels by testing the drop in pH and set our Co2 levels by targeting a specific pH point to maintain.

I'm running a DIY unit on my 20 gallon, but DIY has it's limitations...generally much over 55 gallons and it's a no go.
There are plenty of DIY thread in the planted forum as well as a number of pages that can be found thru a google search. Of special note is the barbs mentioned in [link=this link]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Planted%20Aquaria/55803.html" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link].
