I was having trouble with nitrates in my Pacu tank about 3 months ago and was told that sword plants work great at reducing them and that the pacu would leave the sword plant alone. So I bought 3 Sword plants each about 18 inches in length. I took them home and planted them in my pacu tank. Well, even though he was still a little guy...about 4-6 inches at the time, he did not hesitate to devour my sword plants one by one. I pulled out the two stubs and tossed them, but I couldn't find the third one.
When I was cleaning the tank a few weeks later, I found it and to my surprise, it had a few very tiny shoots on it and new root growth. I quickly moved it to a safer tank where it is doing very well, still small, but fuller than it was before and very healthy. It was a great lesson to me that I should not give up on plants...or trust any plant with a pacu.

Actually I haven't. When I first got him I had a beautiful grove of cabomba in my tank...it went very quickly...he also grew a lot during that time.

I just keep his tank live plant free.
