i bought some mardel plant nutrient like i previously posted about. i dosed some after doing a water change then two days later i dosed again forgetting about the original dose. the following day i changed the filter pad without adding caron to it. i lost two fish with 48 hours of doing so, and i also had a bit of an algea bloom. i was wondering if putting the excess ferts could be the cuase of my downfall? i did a 30% water change since, and ill wait a little before dosing again

sodaaddict84,

First of all, sorry to hear about the fish loss.

Secondly, I don't think it is fertilizer related. I don't know the details of your product, but from what I understand it is a micro fert, right? If you didn't use half the bottle (and only used a dose as the instructions say) then there should be absolutely no side effect on the fishies, even if you would have done this for a few times in a row. Carbon in your filter would not have removed it either, at least not in large quantities.

The fish problem may be related to your changing of the filter pad, as it seems to me that you added a new one, right? In this case, you may have lost some of your bio filter and caused a spike in ammonia.

The algae (what kind, btw) can be a result of the nutrient imbalance, but not a cause for death eiter.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

yea maybe. i think i found the problem. i lost another some time today while i was at work. but when i inspected this one he had a chunk missing, i think my bgk is doing it now. in a way i hope this is it, and not some underlying situation. but i was hoping that it didnt happen for another couple weeks. i also wish i had some testing supplies so that way i could have a more difinitive answer
