My java ferns are now so tall in my 29 gallin they are starting to grow out of the tank. Is there a certain way to trim them back with out killing them? Or do you just chop them off like I used to do to my jungal val? I just dont want to end up with ugly brown tipped plants. If I chop them down, how long will it take before they start to grow again? Thanks for the help guys and gals.

Pull the older outer leaves out by pinching close to the base and giving a small tug. They should just 'pop' out for you.

(Make sure you stand back & have a look every so often - bit like gardening or bonsai - too quickly you can end up with too much in you hand and only a thin little plant left - the plant will still be okay though, just look for aesethic value mostly)

Ooops, sorry just re-read "java fern", not what I thought I read (amazon).

Let the roots develop well, then just snip them off & see if the local lfs wants some, or re-attach to another piece of wood/rock etc.

I have used sharp scissors to just lop leaves at a bit of an angle.

I put the trimmed leaves towards the back and the new leaves at the front, so as to keep the lush look without the harsh trim marks.
