Had the same problem. Looked great for a while , grew HUge and then decied to yellow and breakup into a hell of a lot of baby water sprites. Almost like it suddenly decided it wanted to be a floating plant. Finally got rid of it. Kept a few of the plantlets as floating plants, the root system hanging down looked interesting.

Well I just wanted to update. It seems to me that moving it out of the sand and into the gravel seems to have done the trick because it has been showing some new growth. Hopefully it has a happy home now.

Well that might make sense. My water is about 8.2pH and 6-7 kH. I'm dosing DIY CO2 in one of my tanks, but not the one I had the water sprite in(the pH in there only dropped .2, but there is a lot of growth). I didn't really want to move it into my planted tank, so it's in one of my other misc. tanks that has gravel and decent lighting.

So far it has stopped dying off, and I see some new shoots, so I may just leave it in there if it takes.

I'm not sure if that is universal...as I think Diana Walstad's (The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium) water is hard, and she says she throws it out it grows so fast. But, maybe that depends on how hard you are talking about? I think CO2 concentrations can be easily higher in the lower ph tanks, which would then be the reason that water sprite would do better - it would be the CO2 rather than the ph per se...

I'm just guessing here.

I find that Water Sprite does best in tanks with a lower pH. I can't keep the stuff alive in higher pH tanks, whereas it takes over in the lower ones. Anyone else find that too?

Temps at 78-79, no meds, 2ish wpg, hairgrass and java fern are showing some growth and good color. There's a lot of algea growing in the tank it was in before I moved it, maybe it was getting out competed for nutrients....but I thought it worked the other way around.

Hi,

That's really odd, at the end, it's a die hard plant. So maybe something is wrong with it, have you used medicines in your tank? Ich medication and anything that has copper, can cause the plant to get sick (not die), Is it the only plant that isn't looking good in the tank? what temperature has your water?

It is still dying off...ugh. I removed it from the sand tank and replanted it in a gravel tank. There are only about 4 good stems left out of 20(give or take) when I got it.

I would give it a little more time, sometimes when i do cuttings and replant them, they start to wilter, then they gain strength again, and up the go.

Hmmm....Maybe I'll try that. Maybe it's just getting settled in though, I'll give it some more time.

I've had a lot of luck with water sprite and like to use it as a floater as well.

I just picked some up from my lfs and was told it was a medium light plant. Is this true, and does anyone have any experience with this plant?

Hmmm....It's been dying off on me recently, I don't have such a large bunch anymore. It's the outside that's going brown/dead while the inside is still green. Could it be the sand substrate or just transplant shock?

And, under bright light, it becomes a PEST! It will spit out more baby water sprites that you will eventually have to tear it out or tear your hair out!

Very nice plant for medium light, though.

Unfortunately, it is also a favorite snack for snails.

Water sprite is one of my favorite plants. It was actually the first I ever got and when I bought it originally it was almost dead... when the LFS worker handed it to me half of it just desintigrated. 9 months later it's taken over my tank on more then one occasion and I've given many of it's "offspring" away to co-workers with aquariums. Great plant.. good choice!

Sweet, I was hoping to be able to spread it out a little. Falstaf is the hero of the planted aquaria section.

Welcome!

Another tip is that you make bunches of only 3 stems and plant them about 2in appart from one another, this will let light through to the bottom leaves

Sweet deal then, I got a huge "bunch" for $3. It's the first bunch plant that I really like. Wisteria just looks like some ornamental veggie on the side of a salad.

Thanks for the quick reply!!
