Well as some of you may know i do not have a job.....an this strikes a problem when iam trying to improve my 10g. tank. I right now have 2 amazon plants, and one lava rock. I would like to keep both of the amazons in there and maybe the rock maybe not....it takes up alot of room....i might move it to another 10g. My question is, i would like an air system or whatever i need to help my plants live to their finest potential and keep my expenses to a low minimun. I have about 30$ to spend and already plan on buying some hornwort to start off and maybe some other 3-5 watt plants. Nothing over 10$....that leaves me with 20$....i want to have an airsystem or something that will most help my plants. I have a local Petco* so you can look on the petco.com site to see their products and prices....iam buying the plants off line by the way...

TIA

i dont think Petco has any cheaper Co2 systems. I have seen the fiz factory there but it was over $20. The amazon swords will be fine in there for a while, but they will have to be moved to a much bigger tank later. Even 1 is to big for a 10 gallon if you are talking about Echinodorus bhleri or E. amazonicus. You could always do a DIY CO2 system for alot cheaper.

Are you asking about an airsystem to allow your swords to grow emersed (out of water)? I think a canopy to keep humidity may be enough. I failed with an open top "natural tank" and some big sword, but just put it in the substrate and hoped it would grow emersed.

If you are asking about CO2, high ppm and stable DIY can easily be done with your budget. Research staggered/multiple bottle setups and reactors. Pick appropriate plants for your tank size.

Anybody can have a beautiful planted tank, but getting there is sort of like having another job. Good luck.

Peter,

If you're looking to do a planted tank on the cheap, then the CO2 route is not for you. Tom Barr wrote an article about growing plants in a low light non-CO2 tank. Check it out - http://www.barrreport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=395

There may be a lot in here you don't get the first time through, so feel free to ask any questions in the planted forum and we'll try to help you out. Unfortunetely, $30 isn't a lot to work with, but maybe you can work something out. Good luck
