Hi, a friend has some living rock to give me - lucky me - but it has been out of the water for 4 days, after her tank broke. Will it still be ok to put in my tank or will it have died by now? Thanks in advance.

Living rock ? You mean like live rock for a saltwater tank ?

Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.

Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.

Or maybe a rock with Moss on it?

I hope this is the case.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier - I lost the post - doh.

I dont know what it is but it came out of her tropical tank and has some java moss growing on it. Its reddish brown with lots of holes in it.
If I do want to use it will it be ok to - all her fish were healthy when I got them. I have it in a bucket now to keep it moist and thought I might use it in the nursery tank when my guppies give birth?

shiftingsands,

Sounds good, giving that it is java moss. What is it attached to? A rock or wood? If it is a rock with holes then you should test it first (with vinegar) to see if it leaks calcuim. If you put some drops of it on the rock and it starts to fizzle quite a bit then it is leaking and should not be used in a tank with a lower ph as I assume your guppy breeder would be. Calcium raises the ph over time.

If it is wood then you should be fine, given that it came from a healthy tank to begin with.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

Sounds like lava rock, which is completely safe and won't raise your GH/KH or any other H.
