Hi, i am setting up a new 29 gallon planted aquarium, and need advice on the equipment.

This is what i am planning on buying:

*29 Gallon aquarium
*Whisper 40 power filter
*Visi-therm 150W Stealth Heater
*Perfecto 30" flourescent Full Hood
*Eco-Complete substrate (how many 20 pound bags do i need?)
*Zoo Med 24" Flora Sun Flourescent Bulb

I am also planning on buying some flourish tabs and other ferts......Is all this equipment good enough, or is there anything else i am leaving out?

The one thing I'd upgrade would be the hood/light. Since your plants will depend on light, I'd get yourself a glass cover, and at least a dual fluorescent tube setup. 1 bulb will really limit your plant choices.

Eco complete is a great plant substrate, I'd recommend at least two of those bags.

Since you have a planted substrate in mind, I would skip the root tabs, and get yourself the flourish line, or dry ferts. Just make sure you get nitrogen(macro), phosphorus(macro), flourish(micros), and excel(carbon). That will cover the major stuff.

The Doctors have one in oak and in black on their site. The price is fairly reasonable too.

You need 24" - which you had put down correctly in your original message. I just purchased the Flora-Sun and recommend using a double set up as well and maybe something a bit stronger than flora-Sun which gives a VERY red light of 5,000 K. Personally i am not happy with the looks ans will go for something with more K's next time. I checked the bulbs in my big set up with double lighting and the K's are higher.

He needs a 30" hood but they take 24" bulbs.

I recommend getting a 30" 65w compact fluorescent fixture. It will allow you to have many plant choices. Thats what my 29g planted started out with.

ok, so i'm thinking about odering a 30" 65W satellite compact flourescent fixture...but I'm a little confused on what kind of bulb to buy. It seems like most of the bulbs are for saltwater use...what kind of bulb would be best for a planted aquarium?
