what is the best way to plant? I'm thinking I will put in the gravel, fill the tank halfway, plant it, and then finish filling it slowly as not to disturb the plants. what is a good way to anchor them? how long will it take for them to root enough to not float up on me if i disturb them?

also: will i be able to add more plants in after I finish the initial planting? I'm waiting on a low growing "lawn" type plant that doesn't come in until next week.

It does not matter at what time you start planting. You can fill the tank with water the whole waay or whatever you like. You can buy plants and add them any time you want.

I plant my plants by bunching all the roots together in my fist, digging a deep pit in the gravel with my fist, releasing my fist into the pit, then while holding the plant base down, use my fingers to fill in the pit and cover the roots. Then I leave them alone for 3 or 4 days. by making sure the roots are completely covered, my plants stay rooted and do rather well. I have 2 amazon swords, anubias, a banana plant, dwarf sagittaria and ludwiga, all spread between 4 tanks.

For stemmed (long narrow roots) plants, I use planting tweezers (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=10678&Ne=40000&R=21598&Nao=45&N=2004+2021). Its is so much easier then planting by hands. You just shove the plants in and you're done in a matter of seconds. No worries if you got the roots down far enough because it can push it all the way down to the base of the tank.
