So, I've decided on the co2 system I want to buy. Bubblecounter comes seperately though-- what's the significance of a bubblecounter? Do I need one? I'm a total newbie with this co2 stuff.

i may be wrong, but i think it is made to keep a steady rate of c02 in your tank so your not overloading your tank with it.

you use the bubble counter to make sure you have a steady flow of co2 into the tank. depending on the type of co2 system you have, that could be anywhere from 1-4 bubbles per second. start with 1 bubble per sec and keep a close eye on your ph levels. make sure you know your kh levels as well, then use [link=this chart]http://www.sfbaaps.com/reference/table_01.shtml" style="COLOR: #ff0044[/link] to make sure you have the best concentration of co2 in your tank

Some professional CO2 set ups (like JBL) don't use bubble counter because you can actually see the bubbles going up the diffuser. Those systems would require a bubble counter if your tank is heavily planted and the diffuser would be invisible.
