CO2 is used by plants when the lights are on in the tank.

Tanks with more than 2wpg (watts per gallon) of light often have CO2 running to help the plants use more of the light rather than allow the algae to use it.

DIY CO2 would work on a 6 gallon tank, have a look thru this forum and tech tink for ideas.

Well Co2 is certainly not neccessary but it is beneficial if you have enough light as Babel said.

Really don't think it's worth the bother on a 6gal though. The plants would grow out of the tank every couple of days With a tank that size better keeping it simple.

Supplementing C02 is really to push growth, you don't need or want to be pushing growth in such a small tank, if anything you want to be thinking about plants that DON'T get too big or grow too fast.
