Boiling it for 10 minutes will make it safe for your tank. Other than that it's just a matter of making a cave out of it.

If you hold a coconut in the palm of your hand and tap (not bang) on its equator with a hammer as you rotate the coconut round and round its axis, it should crack open along the equator. Alternately, you can saw it in half, which guarantees a clean even cut. I have done it both ways and found it took a lot of sawing! Maybe a reflection of my handsaw, or my lack of skill using it, but I now prefer to use the gentle tapping method.

Use a stout knife or screwdriver blade to pry the white "meat" from the coconut. Give the shell a good scrub under the tap (no soap!) and it should be good to go. If you wish, boiling it for 5 - 10 minutes should do no harm. The coconut shells are self sinking. I like to drill a small hole in the top of the shell to allow any trapped air to escape.

Well first of all you have to make sure you only leave the shell, any "flesh" will rot and polute your tank, then you can boil them for 10 minutes is more than enough.

Don't toss all the Flesh away, plecos love the stuff and will devoure small pieces, it makes a good treat.
