I have a big mess of italian vals in my tank. They've been sending out a quite a number of runners over the past few months, but as the leaves get longer and older, they're getting thinner and the top parts that float on the surface turn brownish/ red and eventually fall off, which kinda ruins the look of the plants. i imagine this is some sort of nutrient problem, but any ideas as to what?

i consulted chuck gadds webpage and he lists the symptoms of a number of nutrient problems, but doesnt really mention the brown/red coloration. thanks!

If it's the top part it sounds like it might be burning from the lights and being out of the water. That is if it's only happeing once it reaches the surface and is out of the water and in close contact with the lights.

Ditto Babel, it happens to me as well. Just trim them - it's not necessarily great for them but as val-keepers know there's always a new runner coming along if the old one is unhappy. and it seems as though the vals in my tank are being selected for "accepts mowing." Darwin would love me.

but i guess there's no way around it with compact flour. lights. i'll just stick to trimming them, then. thanks!

you could also try cutting the runners off from the mother plant, the new shoots will still be taking energy from the mother plant rather than relying on their root system etc
