I was just wondering if UV sterilers are ok to use in a planted aquarium, or more importantly is it safe to use fertilzers with it?

I dont think they would do anything to the fertilizers. The uv light just kills algae spores, bacteria, parasites. Why do you want one?

I'm using one on my tank, but just read somewhere that they can be damaging to macro's. Now I'm not sure if this is true or not - can anyone verify this?

Well I've been using one 24/7 for 2 years. So if you could find the deficiency in my plants please let me know:

If you are asking if the UV harms the plants- no it doesn't.

Its for killing parasites, bacteria, etc- its usually used in ponds but you can use it in a tank if you wanted.

FWIW- nice tank tetratech

I found the site that made a link between UV and trace elements...

http://fins.actwin.com/mirror/algae.html

For fish only tanks, a properly set up ultraviolet sterilizer will kill algal spores in the water and prevent them from gaining a toehold. For planted tanks, this is not a good solution since the UV light will also oxidize trace elements needed by the plants and will limit the plant's growth potential.

Comments?
