i just got this plant, and it is my first, one stupid question, is there a way to talk a part of it off, so i can make it into two, or will it do that by itself, or will it just grow up?

You can pull hairgrass apart into clumps or little individual plants to spread around the tank. I think it does best left in clumps. It will eventualy spread out as well as growing up but I never got it to grow very fast. Mine barely spread before it started slowly dying for unknown reasons. It was one of my first plants though so I was considering trying it again now that I have more light and a better co2 system.
