You can't. Mets are herbivorous. Attempting to halt their plant eating tendencies is akin to preventing a lion from eating meat.

You might be able to discourage the behavior however by only using tough and distasteful plants such as Java Ferns and Anubias species, and providing lots of vegetables for your fish to eat instead.

Heres the latest the plants i got are 3 contortion val and 1 java fern. the fish have destroyed the vals theres probally about 3 inches of long stems left on each plant, now what should i do leave the plant rooted and will it continue to grow?? the weird part is the fish are barely touching the fern and its looking good. thanks everyone for the responses. im just new to live plants and its been frustrating. :%)

There's really no point of leaving the vals in there; any new growth will be eaten quickly. Java Ferns, like I said in my first post, are distasteful and few fish will bother them.

The best thing to do would be to just aquascape your tank with Java Ferns (both common and lace varieties) and Anubias species (there are many and all have very tough foliage). If you do this, you must provide your fish with fresh vegatables since they won't have any aquarium plants to eat.

Would snails eat java fern because I seem to notice that most of the leaves seem to crumble into small pieces. Most of the leaves have holes and turning brown. Could it be snails because I only two or three very small ones in the tank.

tank has: tiger barbs, gouramis, angelfish, red tailed shark and hoplo catfish (30g)

Another thing with plant eaters is add alot of plants at once. If you put in lots of plants they can nibble and sample various ones without completely killing any. If you add just 2-3 at a time they are going to eat them down to nothing.
