Though hatchetfish don't technically need floating plants, they are certainly recommended. If anything, the plants provide the fish with a sense of security, knowing that they can take cover if something frightens them. Hornwort should be an acceptable floating plant, it seems to be happy enough when not rooted.

I can't help you much with the silver dollars, but I don't think that they need to munch on plants as well. Isn't it more of a nuisance than a care requirement?

Hornwort works as a great floating plant....so long as you don't have HOB stlye filtration. IME it just ends up getting either sucked up by the intake or chewed up by the outflow. However since it's cheap enough it won't hurt to get some to experiment. Depending on your tank setup you may end up with too much of it as it's known for taking over tanks. Something you can also try is to "plant" it in your substrate (hornwort does not have true roots rather uses it's lower leaves to help anchor itself) and let it grow up and across the surface of the tank.
To prevent other fish from eating it you can feed them more veggies to an effort to give them the greens they need without snacking on your plant life.

Madwill, I haven't had much luck with the hornwort, though a lot of folks here have. The main plant that I use as a floater, planter, and my fish love to nibble on (heck had newborn fry live off of it for a week and nothing else) Is Anarcharis, this stuff grows great...You can plant it, let it float, let the fishies eat it...and unless you put it in with goldies it still survives to grow...that's just my suggestion...heidi
