Tropica.com identifies this plant as an easy plant that can be grown in low to very high light. Does anyone have experience growing this plant in low light (about 1.5 wpg) without CO2? Did it become leggy in its efforts to reach the light at the surface? Any experience you can share with this plant in low tech conditions would be appreciated.

Umm, I actually had that one in my tank for a while as well. This time I remember why it went out, though. My boyfriend ordered it for the pond and then decided it was still too cold to put it in the pond, so I agreed for it to be in the tank until it got warm enough. It spent something like two months in the tank and grew, which annoyed me as it was still in the pot the whole time and I didn't appreciate that...

Oh, and it didn't do that well in the pond, although it should have...

It is very easy. It'll ok in that light. It's a pretty leggy plant anyway but the leaves due get big. It's not really a stem plant, it likes to float. It'll head for the suface anyway and once there will spread across like little lily pads. You can let it do this for a while and trim bits off to plant elsewhere.

It wont root for love nor money, it has a set of roots at each internode and extracts nutrients direct from the water. I just tie a small stone onto a bunch and plop it in.

It grows fine in low light, you can keep it down and not looking leggy if you trim it a lot. With constant trimming it's even possible to make a foreground "carpet" of the stuff. Really easy plant, I haven't had it for too long but it's foolproof as far as I can tell.

I appreciate all of the input. Pennywort is definitely on my list of plants I'm going to purchase. I'll be ordering plants online this week.

Thanks again!

Good stuff. Just watch Potassium with it, it does NOT like low potassium and melts if there's any deficiency. I wasn't adding enough to one of my low light tanks and it was disintegrating before my eyes. It was the first plant to show any sign of deficiency, right after it started melting I saw pinholes in the H. polysperma. The only thing I changed was increased potassium and the melting stopped.

Be gentle with it. The stems don't look it but are quite sensitive and bruise easily. This will lead to melting of the stem. This plant is not pretty when it melts, bascially it dissolve to a green mucus like substance. Very yukky.
