hi. i recently bough a "moss ball" from the auction at my aquarium club meeting.

i bought it for $5 CAN and it is about an inch and a half in diameter. it is not java moss, but rather a solid, fuzzy, medium green ball.

anyone know much about these? does it need high light, etc... did i get a good deal?

Moss balls, AKA Marimo Balls, are really a type of algae. They grow in clumps and, in their natural environment, are rolled up into balls by current. Yeah, since the aquarium doesn't have quite those conditions, you're probably gonna have roll them up yourself from time to time.

Other than that I don't know much about them. I assume they're not hard to keep since they're algae and all.:%)

Hi there,

I saw a post about these somewhere, but can't remember if it was here or at a different forum site...

Either way, Tropica has info on them:

I have a few of these. I haven't seen them in lfs here, mine were purchased online for ~$3.00US.

My tanks are either low or medium-low light. The moss balls have done well and none of my fish bother them. The only type of maintenance I do is knock them around a bit when I gravel vac to shake off anything that might have accumulated on them. IME very easy to keep, neat looking 'plants'.

I bought 6 of these plants on ebay for 20 $ Canadian.
They are neat plants. You need to take them out of your aquarium and lightly rinse them all over with luke warm water once a month, and turn them over so they dont go brown on one side. They are not eaten by fish very often.
They dont require much light, but will grow faster with higher light.
Great interesting plant.
