i got a moss ball today and they're really cool.is it true that they'll help my plants outcompete with algae?

i was also advised to "roll it around" and rotate it to prevent it from browning on the underside as well as keep it round. i understand that you need to change its position so the brown bottom gets sunlight, but do i actually need to roll it in my hand to keep it from going flat??

No, it will not get flat, you just need to roll it over so that all sides will get some light.

They're neat. They have a tendency to collect waste, so periodically it's a good idea to give them a light squeeze in the water to get that stuff out.

They're also very slow growers, so their ability to help outcompete other algae in the tank it going to be very very small. Interestingly enough, those moss balls (or Marimo Balls as they're also known) are also a type of non-invasive algae. They apparently grow in just about any lighting condition... as one guy from azgardens.com put it to me "They could probably grow in a toilet bowl", although I don't think I'd try this myself.

nice one joe! LMAO!

i bought 10 off ebay for 13.50 inc p&p kept two, gave one to my mate and sold the other 7 on ebay for £16

i'd advice giving them a squeeze in water out of the tank, esp before you put them in... i made that mistake water went a lil cloudy hehe

they are cool tho, aparently they will rise and fall depending on the light levels, but i think thats probably BS as ive never seen it happen, or can imagine it happening either, but hey who knows!

I have 6 of these neat plants. They were about the size of a large jawbreaker when I got them, and now are about the size of a tennis ball. I take mine out once a month (every second water change), and rinse it in lukewarm tap water really well, roll it around tightly to maintain its shape, and then drop em back in the tank. They dont need high light to grow- however the ones I have in higher light conditions have grown twice as fast. Mine float, roll around, fall, and congregate together
Sometimes I think they are tribbles .....watch out they could get into everything!
Anyway, I have noticed mine are starting to grow what look like little ears off of them, I assume these are baby plantlets growing.

The high light in my high light tanks is :
90g- 135watt Corallife Compact Flourescent- 1.5 wpg
10g- 2 23w screw in flourescents - 4.6 wpg.
They grow best in the moderate lighting of my 90g tank.
