hi everyone
just wanted to get some info regarding my 3 week old setup. firstly my tank is a 3foot 250litre tall tank. currently i have 2 fluro tubes (growlux and powerglow) total of 38watts. on for 12hrs. is this enough light for common stem plants and grasses?
also all efforts to remove snails off vallis failed as i now have o load of tiny snails everywhere! however they are doing a good job of eating the small amounts of algae that has developed on some leaves! but im ghessing as they get bigger they will start to damage my plants right?
any input apreciated greatly

I would say the plants you could grow are low light plants. Anubias, java fern, java moss, and maybe green hygro. Those are just the plants that come to mind. Search [link=tropica]http://www.tropica.com" style="COLOR: #FFD700[/link] for other low light plants.

It's best to manually remove snails every now and again to control the population. They probably won't get very big, but if there's any left over food for them to eat they will multiply and become unsightly.

If they are Malaysian Trumpet Snails(MTS) they will be fine in the tank. They are the cone shaped ones. If you absolutely hate the snails, you can get some Botia sidthimunki(dwarf chained loaches) if you can find them or some other types. Clown loaches are pretty common. These do get big(around 14 in.), so you would have to trade them in for smaller ones when they get too big. This would take many years though. Both of these fish like to live together so no less than three in a group. I have had three in my 30 gallon planted for almost 2 years now. No snail to be seen.

yeh i had clowns in my 4foot, there cool but too big for my Tetra setup. thinking now along the lines of some Ottos. About the lighting, i bought another light today so now tank has an added 18watt so totaling 66watts on for 12 hrs. it seems really bright plus my water is crystal clear so light reaces bottom easily. Is this still only enough to grow low light plants??

If the tank is 250 litres (66 gallons)as Matty said you could only grow lowlight plants. If the tank is this size it must be really tall which will make it even more difficult to grow anything buy lowlight. You would need a least 2wpg or about double your current lights.

Anubias & Java Ferns will survive in low light tanks. Even Moss Balls will be fine in there.
