well, you'll need something to act as a bubble counter. start off with the rate of 1 bubble/sec, let your tank ph stabilize and then measure your ph -- usually takes about 3-4 hours before you start to see results, then let it sit overnight and test it again.

the way i have mine set up, it runs 24/7 at 1 bubble/sec, and my ph dropped from 7.6 to 6.8. just keep an eye on your ph and make sure it's not dropping too quickly. if it drops below what you want, then try to get the bubble rate lower than 1/sec.

ive done all that testing already - my kh is about 3 and my ph is right now at 7.3... i figure it needs to be down around 6.8... my question is, is it worth it to buy a ph regulator for my set-up... would i be able to keep it relatively steady without one, and how so?

first, you have to find out your water's kh (carbonate hardness). anything better than about 2-3 means your water is sufficiently hard enough not to have wildly fluctuating ph. then you can compare your ph to [link=this chart]http://www.sfbaaps.com/reference/table_01.shtml" style="COLOR: #ff0044[/link] to find your optimal ph based on your kh readings.
