I bought this plant labeled as a java fern which I know that it isn't I have 2 of the m that I really like and are flourishing in my tank. They have large thin flowy leaves that are a light green color. I think that it is a type of apongeton but I am not sure.
here is a pic of the entire plant:

and here is a pic of the base:

I would really like to know what it is so if you have any Idea what it might be, tell me

It looks very much like a slightly etiolated pond lilly (Nuphar japonica spatterdock) to me. I have one of those myself I love the bright green color of the leaves. It's an easy plant, and doesn't need much attention, but in order to keep the stems of the leaves short, it will need a bit more light.

Good luck with it.

it looks a little like that but the leaves in the pictures look thicker and more heart shaped while mine are thin, long and frilly

Vincent,

Looks like it could be an Aponogeton crispus. The only difference I see is that your leaves look shorter, but otherwise it fits the profile.

I still maintain that it's a pond lilly . The color of the leaves and their somewhat fragile look match exactly with what mine looks like When lillies have been shaded for a long time the leaves will get longer stems and elongate rather than grow wide.

LF, I used to have Aponogeton crispus in my tanks and this one doesn't really look like it. If I recall correctly, A. crispus leaves are much more wavy and the tip ends in a point, instead of being rounded. Also the color is quite different from what I remember, a more yellowish green.

When this plant makes a new leaf, does it come out as a sort of skewed T-shape, where the leaf is curled up and only unfolds after it's grown out a little? (the stem being the lower part of a "T" and the leaf being the crossbar of the "T" ). If so, that would give a good indication of the family of plants it belongs to.

I've never seen an aponogeton with a green bulb. So IMO it's not an aponogeton of any kind. Plus there aren't any common ones I'm aware of that form that heart shaped leaf. I'm no apon master, but from my experience, it doesn't look like one. I do know that lilies have heart shaped leaves....so I'm inclined to agree with Bonke here.

Well,

I didn't know it was a competition of some sort

What does the winner get?

Anyway, turning my head 90 degrees and having the blood rush into one side of my brain may have impaired my vision, but it was worth a shot

The winner gets a pond lilly from budzilla.

Did I make it sound like a competition? I just was stating my opinion.

I agree about the sideways pic

yeah doc, it does grow with unfurling leaves.

sorry about the pic on its side, I'm just lazy I guess

I guess it will become some kind of a competition, as long as it is identified.

let the games begin

Well then, that makes me all the more certain that it is a lilly I'll try to get a photo of the one I have in my tank, the base looks very similar to yours. It may be somewhat tricky though ans it is surrounded by other plants, but I'll give it a shot.

Well I know this thread has been dead for quite some time but I want in on it!

the base of the plant is throwing me throw a loop but the leaves look like an Aponogeton ulvaceus. We haven't had one in our store in a while but Aponogeton's have a bulb that they grow from. Hence why the base is throwing me.
