Hi all,

Got 2 plants I'm not 100% on their id.Wonder if anybody has any ideas.

Plant #1
Rosette plant. Leaves kind of heart shaped, about 3" long and 11/2" wide.Throws up new leaves like an Anubias, they come curled in and when reach desired height unfurl. The guy who sold it to me could only give me the Indonesian name "Jambi", they had two varieties, the other was a darker green with slightly waxy leaves. At first I thought maybe a Radican Sword ?

Plant#2

A real puzzler. It was tiny when I got it and I was 99% sure it was a Melon Sword plantlet. As soon as I Put it in the tank it transformed itself.
The strange thing is it throws up 2 completely different leaf shapes and sizes Half the leaves are small and heart shape and half are long and lancelote. They stay that way (ie the heart shaped ones don't grow into lancelote ones). Also they have noticable reddish criss cross vein patterns. The other thing is while the long leaves seem healthy enough the stems aren't strong enough to keep the leaf upright and they flop over to a horizontal position, the stems looking healthy enough. Not sure if all this is due to some nutrient deficiency mutating the plant. My best guess is Crypt Parva

Hi,

Image #1 is a Echinodorus Schulten
Image #2 is a Echinodorus Quadricostatus var. xinguensis (Dwarf Swordplant). It acts just the way you describe it does, it will adapt to different levels of light and the leaf lenght will change according to light intensity.

Hope that helps, if you need the profile for #1 let me know

Falstaff,

You are a walking encyclopedia of plants !

If you have a link for profile of plant#1 I would appreciate it, tried to google but it drew a blank.

Thanks for the help.

Tetraman,

Thanks, 2 new additions after months of trying to find, just got at the weekend. Found an professional aquascaper/supplier who had a tank full of them and managed to talk him into giving me 2 (I asked for more but he wouldn't part with them).

Actually I'm pretty sure they are in fact False SAE's (but definately NOT CAE or Flying Fox). If the they are false somebody forgot to tell the fish ! They immediately set out on the algae and haven't stopped since. Luckily I don't have much of an algae problem just tend to get green fuzz algae on the top leaves of plants , closest to light and a little on some of the slow growers. They tucked in and in 2 days they reduced the algae by about 50%, they never stop cleaning the plants - just what I needed
