I'm guessing it's 6X25watt CF bulbs on a glass top...I was contemplating doing 8X25 watt CF bulbs, but I don't think that'd fit over the tank I'm gonna do 4X25 watt CF...

Tetraman, wondering how you are getting 155watts over a 29gal. Even with PC's sounds a bit cramped or are you using MH lights ?

Be a bit worried with that kind of light and no CO2 to help the plants use you may run into algae problems.

They are a tad spendy, and they are sensitive and like a lot of current. Read up on them, and make sure you know what you're getting into BEFORE you buy them

My Hillstream Loaches are my favorite fish in my 29g, but I've had to change a lot around to sui their needs...

For my 20 gallon long (same footprint as a 29), I bought 2 25 pound bags of gravel and used about one and a half of the bags. So... yeah, about 40-45 pounds should be good, I'd think.

I LOVE my banana plant... it's really quite gorgeous. The underwater leaves range from 2-4" wide and it keeps throwing up lily pads, which my fish love to play in. Definitely one of my favored plants. When I reaquascape, it is SO getting a place of honor.

I think about 45 pounds of gravel would be good...

I'd reccomend atleast 6 ottos...they like to have company, and they do a great job in higher numbers. 1-2 Hillstream Loaches would be good too, they eat many kinds of algae that ottos don't, but they get bigger and work slower. Hillstreams also tend to eat mostly off the glass and not clean the plants.

OH I would never be stupid enough to put something out in the wild that wasn't native there. Because australians know about there little "friend" the cane toad]:|]:|. And i was also thinking 45 because i want them to have plenty to grow in and to spread there roots out.

and that is where i get my craws ( at about .5-1 inch long) and then when they are 3-5 inches then i let them go back in the same place i got them in.

That's cool. When I originally read your first post it sounded like something was getting put into your creek...glad to hear that it's something that came from the creek ( native to that creek).

Does any body else think that 30 is the right amount of pounds?
How thick do you want your substrate? If it were me, I'd probably start out with 45 pounds. 30 pounds doesn't look like much when it goes into the aquarium.

I have never used flourite or eco-complete myself. Just plain old aquarium gravel for me, works just fine imo.

As for how many pounds of gravel, I'm not sure, but I'd just get 30 pounds, see if it's enough, if not get some more.

Shrimp tank, that'll be pretty cool, ottos are great little fish. I've got two in my 20 gal, very diligent workers, good algae hunters. Although, my ottos are kinda' weird... One of them only ever eats algae off the walls and driftwood, and the other only ever eats off of the gravel. So I'd recommend at least two, just in case.

PEARL Duh ( i knew that) Ok i will check out those plants. Thanks. Again how much of the of the substrate ( pounds wise ) do in need and what are your experiences with both flourite and eco complete.

I will see if i can afford the co2 system. and i will look at the prices to see if i will do a diy system.

[span class="edited"][Edited by 2004-07-23 23:11][/span]

OH and this will be a shrimp only tank and maybe endlers livebearers. and maybe a couple of ottos to get the side of the tank algea.

So do you think i could get them to bubble ( forgot what its called.

You mean pearl? Probably with that much light, are you going to use a co2 system?

As for plants, I'd suggest you take a look at limnophila sessiliflora (asian ambulia). Similar looking to cabomba, grows faster, I personally think it's a much more attractive plant though.

150 watts in a 29g is a bit excessive... but it's not that insane... 150/29=5.2 Watts Per Gallon (WPG). I have a tank with 6 WPG, and I HAD a tank with 7.5 WPG...I went a bit overboard... 5.2 WPG is still more than most people have

With 5.2 WPG you will be able to keep about any plant you want to keep... Cabomba is a nice med/high light plant, Hornwort is a really low light plant...but it will probably grow about 6 inches a week in 5.2 WPG Aponogetons are nice, some prefer higher light, some lower. Dwarf Lillies and Bananna Lilies are nice and would grow quite good in your tank...but they put lilly pads on the surface of your tank and block out light...some aponogetons do too. Pothos (Devils's Ivy) is a common houseplant that does excelently when planted in a tank Anachris (Elodea) is a nice plant that's considered a medium light plant, but will grow in any amount of light...it grows much faster in higher light, slower in lower light.

Your options are about endless...look for some nice plants...look them up on the net...get them...and have fun

100% flourite can get a bit messy most of the time... Eco-Complete is good I've heard, and it's less messy
