If you added even a single strand, yes it can very well
reproduce and use detritus for nutrition. So it is more than
likely that the java moss you added has attached to the gunk.

It desn't surprise me that hardy java moss survived despite
the brown gunk.

HTH,
Megil.

Java Moss is very hardy & it will survive in difficult conditions.

Funny thing is, i have Java moss in my 2 gallon with 15 watts and co2 injection. Light running 10 hours a day, and my moss wont grow, in fact it keeps dying.

Guppy gurl,

Yup, that could be some moss that is growing there. Just make sure that it really looks like the moss you added and not like some form of algae.

That is why people recommend trimming your moss outside of the tank. All the little clippings will spread as soon as they can hold on to something.

And Sleepy, that sounds like a cool tank. Why don’t you create a thread where you tell us about your moss problem? I am curious and would like to dig in further.\

Ingo

Edit: I didn't check the date when this thread was created and didn't notice why it was so far up the list. Hopefully the info is still helpful.
