Are there any other floating plants that are as effective as hornwort is with nitrates?

Water wisteria can work as a floating plant, it'll want to grow roots so it can go either way. It's slightly more demanding of light than hornwort (2wpg+) but has been sucking the nitrAtes in my tanks dry ()

Ok, I'm very much a plant novice and this is probably a dumb question, but how is wpg determined?

Rather simple really, look @the lights and take how many flourescent watts you have.
If you have a screw in flourescent like this

take the watts used (many will be marked as 60 watts but they only use 11 or 19).

If it's a long tube light just use the watts from that, or if it's not reported a rule of thumb is that a 2'bulb is 20 watts a 3' bulb is 30 watts...ect.

Then just take watts/gallon to get wpg .

....Pretty self explanitory. Number of watts (of your bulb--preferrably daylight flourecent) divided by gallons.

IME, water lettuce also does a good job of nutrient removal.

# of watts / gallons of water = wpg So, if you have two 30 watt bulbs over a 30g, you've got 2 wpg. Another alternative could be anacharis, or water sprite. Both will float (water sprite stays more on top), and should use nitrates, although maybe not as many as hornwort. Duckweed is loved and hated by many, because of its vigor, however I find it hard in the tank, but easy in the pond (I suspect due to light levels).
P.S. That cake looks yummy!

Thanks, that's definitely easy....now that I have numbers, what determines low, medium, high?

indeed it does.

IMO, high lighting is anything over 3 watts per gallon, but others will likely give you different figures.

Low: 1-2
Med:-2-4
High:4-5...
Most red plants (with the exception of Alternathera reinekii) really need high light.

Many plants will do well in the medium range.

Water lettuce under high lighting does not grow as large as it does in ponds and is very effective (plus I got mine free from my mom's pond) for absorbing nitrates. It grows like a weed but it's big enough you can pull it out without too much fuss.

I like water lettuce and it was doing well in my 29g until the fish made a literal salad bar out of it

edit: my apologies, I forgot to say thank you for all the replies and info, it's very much appreciated

dont forget elodea will also chew up a lot of nitrates and can live in relative low light, say 1 wpg. it realy likes to float. most people say that it is really to grow and it generally is.

I have elodea floating in four of my tanks actually. I've had a lot of luck with it; in my Endler's tank the floating roots have started to root into my driftwood, very cool. I didn't know how effective it was with nitrates, hornwort usually gets all the attention for that.

Thanks again.
