When I take cuttings of anacharis, the cutting grows great but the bottom stem stops growing. The top node turns brown, and the only growth is on the offshoots. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

I think that's supposed to happen. I know at least that with trees, if you cut a branch off, it will stop growing there and make new shoots out the sides or something.

That's normal - the offshoots are where the bottom portion does its growing. You'll see the same in every stem plant, although some throw shoots much closer to the top that appear to be regrowth of the pruned area.

Yes, that’s what happens. Some plants react differently to trimming then others. Plants like Hygro, and Ludwigia when cut will branch out at either side of the cut thereby becoming more bushy and attractive. But some, like Anacharis and Cambomba behave differently , usually when cut the growth from the bottom have is not as attractive or just doesn’t grow at all. Usually with these types of plant when they get too big, I pull them up and cut whatever length I want from the bottom and just plant the tops, throw the bottoms out.

Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.
