If you should decide that the issue is an Iron deficiency, there is the [link=Flourish Iron]http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/FlourishIron.html" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link] that you could add to up this parameter explicitly. You want to have about 0.1ppm of Iron, don’t bother with a test kit, most are really crappy. Instead you could add it (as instructions say) and see if it makes a difference, if not – add just a little more – and if that doesn’t make a difference then this is not the problem and we have to find out what else could be off. Both bottles you have seem to be more of a Trace (Micros) mix, although one contains Potassium which is a Macro nutrient. Your bottle doesn’t say how much the Potassium is increased by each dose, does it? Your tanks don’t seem awfully overstocked, I am really curious as to where the high Nitrates come from. Tell us more about your water change routine. Do you vacuum the gravel (in the open spaces)? Do you remove decaying leaves? Ingo ![]() |

To answer you questions about the fertilizers. I haven't heard of the 7 ball stuff but the conents you listed are: Cu-Copper Co-Cobalt B-Boron Zn-Zinc(no such element as Z,so I am assuming you meant Zn) Mn-Manganese the Mo would technically be Molybdenum, but I have no idea what it's purpose is in fertilizer ![]() If you have inverts depending on the % Cu you may want to avoid this fert. Otherwise this seems to be a trace element fertilizer. For the Botanica potash it basically any of several compounds that contains Potassium (K). It is good to see that they don't add nitrAtes seeing as how already NO3 levels are extremely high. the Potassium is probably the second most inportant element for plant growth second to nitrogen(N). Though I wouldn't say that they contain EVERything you need for plant growth. HTH, Megil. Last edited by Megil Tel'Zeke at 21-Nov-2005 21:24 ![]() |

"Which tank has the 60ppm NO3? Both? That is high. How come? Any ideas? ermmm yes to both, mix of fairly useless test kits and over stocking.....(runs and hides.) Do you add any fertilizer to the water? no,not yet. have got some thing called Seven Balls... and a bottle of ferts called Kent Botanica Grow.... apparently both provide me with everything the plants need, I think from that link you gave me I have an iron defeinancy(too late to be bothered with spelling) What substrate do you have? Any fertilizer in there?" Sand, I could bury the seven balls?(read box - contains Cu, Mo, Co,B, Z, Mn....chemistry not a strong point here what are they??) the bottle stuff gives me - potash, calcium, iron, magnesium, sulfur. I haven't used either one yet, because I didn't really know what I needed. don't like adding random stuff to fish tanks. wanted to ask here first. ok. now tired. thanks Ingo ![]() GFG Never be bullied into silence. Is your tank high or long (that is just me as I haven’t given up on the idea that height plays a role ![]() First of all I would like to give you a [link=Good Link]http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_nutrient.htm" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link] to Chuck Gadd’s site where he talks about nutrient deficiency signs. Maybe this tells you already what is wrong. The Amazon should, if it grows very well, be too big for your tank soon anyways ![]() The cabbage, I have no idea what plant that is, Water Lettuce comes to mind, but I think that is a floating plant. The last one that gets thin, if it is a Crypt then this could be a common situation as they tend to melt. But don’t give up on it, it would come back later. If it is not a Crypt then I would say the problem is the same as with the other plants. For the 35G (is that the 40G in your profile?) Basically the same research will have to be done. And sure it is a low low light tank ![]() Which tank has the 60ppm NO3? Both? That is high. How come? Any ideas? Do you add any fertilizer to the water? What substrate do you have? Any fertilizer in there? Hope this helps a little, Ingo ![]() |
